Safety is more than just 'talk' - it's an experience

The concept of Health, Safety and Environmental was first introduced by Great Britain in the 19th century to enforce health and safety legislation in the workplace. Today, many Organizations throughout the world have some evidence of ‘a safety culture’ existing in their Organization. Research by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has even shown that a good safety culture leads to the following benefits:

But, in-spite of this, many companies are still operating with the misconception that HSE is ‘ONLY’ a document to have as evidence of compliance to regulations. For example, the Health and Safety Statistics key figures for Great Britain (2020/21) shown 1.7 million working people suffered from a work-related illness. Safety is more than ‘Just a talk, it’s an Experience’.

As an HSE Professional these statistics reveal the neglect with which safety has been treated, and I believe this may be due to the lack of integrating the Health, Safety and Environmental Management System within the Organizations culture. You may ask, ‘How is safety an experience?’ Harold S. Geneen stated “Leadership is practiced not so much in words as in attitude and in actions”. HSE should be tangible, and when someone looks at a business, the evidence of Leadership driving Safety will be seen. This is the vision of CWSL to experience safety in its most visible state.

We want to have that understanding and appreciation of a progressive culture of SAFETY that will cause continuous positive improvement in the behaviour of our employees. This is why in 2022 and beyond we are taking safety from the written document to an interactive system at all levels in the Organization. Our Management Team and Critical personnel have given their commitment to take this vision and make it a reality. Our teams’ commitment can be seen in the first step of making this happen.

CWSL will continue to share its HSE experiences with you, in the hope that you will see the true benefits of partnering with a business that has an HSE Management System and continues to transform HSE from "More than just 'talk' but experience”.
